Why do you need a Protein Skimmer?

In the ocean, protein skimming is accomplished naturally by tides and waves. In fact, `nature's skimmate'' is actually the foam you see on the beach. How does a Protein Skimmer work?

First step is to create a surface that the protein particles, organic matter and other waste can cling to. MRC skimmers push air bubbles through water in the main chamber, giving these harmful molecules a ride to the top. At the surface, the bubbles gather together to create a rich foam (skimmate). The protein skimmer then collects the skimmate into a convenient storage cup, leaving only clear, clean saltwater for your reef.
